Part 4Finding seats

Award search tools: which to pay for

Seven tools, honest prices, and the two-tool stack that finds premium seats in minutes. Plus the free cash-fare tools that set your benchmark.

Searching airline websites one at a time is how people conclude that award seats “don’t exist”. They exist. They are spread across 25 programs with different booking windows, and the airline sites are built to sell cash tickets. The tools below scan all of them at once. None costs more than a tenth of what one business class award saves you.

The tools, priced

seats.aero
Price (Oct 2026)
Free tier; Pro 9.99 USD/month or 99.99/year
Best at
Scanning a whole year or region across about 25 programs in seconds. Alerts. Seat counts and availability history.
Watch out for
Cached data, not live. Free tier sees only about 60 days ahead, which misses most premium release windows.
PointsYeah
Price (Oct 2026)
Generous free tier; Premium 19.99/month or 119.95/year
Best at
Best free starting point. Live search, “Daydream” explorer, alerts, transfer-partner tools.
Watch out for
Live searches are slower than cached ones.
point.me
Price (Oct 2026)
Standard 129/year, Premium 260/year, 12 day pass
Best at
Beginners with fixed dates: it writes the transfer and booking steps for you. 30+ programs, live.
Watch out for
Most expensive. Weak for open-ended “where can I go” searches.
AwardTool
Price (Oct 2026)
9.99/month or 99.99/year
Best at
Live search across 28 programs with round-trip and multi-city inputs. Good value.
Watch out for
Younger product, rougher interface.
Roame
Price (Oct 2026)
Free tier; 12.99/month or 109.99/year
Best at
Friendliest interface. SkyView for broad date and region discovery.
Watch out for
Fewer filters and no history.
AwardFares
Price (Oct 2026)
Gold 9.99/month, Diamond 19.99/month
Best at
Power users: flexible dates and airports, release-date and phantom-space guides, live and flex alerts.
Watch out for
17 programs only.
ExpertFlyer
Price (Oct 2026)
Basic 6.99, Premium 12.99, Elite 19.99/month (repriced March 2026)
Best at
Seeing the fare bucket (I, O, X) on one specific flight. Seat alerts. Upgrade-space monitoring.
Watch out for
Technical. No United, Delta or ANA award search. Not a discovery tool.

The free cash-fare tools matter just as much, because the cash fare is your benchmark:

  • Google Flights for the date grid, price tracking and the cheapest paid business fare on your route. Check it before every award search.
  • ITA Matrix for forcing a booking class (search for “I” class to see whether saver-level business inventory exists at all) and for routing codes.
  • Skyscanner for OTA fares Google misses. Its flexible-date views show economy only; business needs exact dates.
A hand scrolling a phone that shows a month calendar with some days highlighted in green.
Green means bookable. The right tool shows a whole month at a glance.

The two-tool stack

Serious bookers run one cached scanner and one live tool:

  1. seats.aero Pro to find which airlines actually have premium space on your route in the months you care about. Sort by points, shortlist flights with two or more seats.
  2. PointsYeah (free) or AwardTool to confirm the shortlisted flights live and see the price in each program that can book them.

Add ExpertFlyer Premium only if you are chasing a specific flight and want an alert when a fare bucket opens. The whole stack is about 20 to 25 dollars a month. One transatlantic business award pays for years of it.

Scan cached first, confirm live second, and add a bucket alert only for one flight

Cached means cached

seats.aero shows what it saw when it last checked, which can be hours ago. Treat every result as a lead, not a booking. Verify on the program’s own site, walk to the payment page, and only then move points. The chapter on Release patterns and phantom space explains why some seats never ticket.

What each tool is actually for

Discovery (“I have 150,000 points, where can I fly business in March?”): seats.aero Explore, PointsYeah Daydream, Roame SkyView.

Fixed dates (“Bangkok to Zurich, 11 to 24 November”): point.me or AwardTool, then the airline sites.

One specific flight (“I want ANA First on NH 203 on 3 April”): ExpertFlyer alert on the fare bucket, plus a seats.aero alert on the flight.

Cash benchmark and sanity check: Google Flights, always.

No single tool does all four jobs

Setting up alerts that work

Alerts are the difference between finding seats and hearing about them afterwards. Set three for every trip:

  1. Route alert in seats.aero or PointsYeah for business and first, your dates plus three days either side.
  2. Last-minute alert on the same route for the window 14 days before departure, when airlines release unsold premium seats (details in the next chapter).
  3. Cash price alert in Google Flights so you notice if the cash fare drops below the point where the award makes sense.

Alerts email you; the Pro tiers also push to your phone. Premium seats on popular routes last minutes to hours, so respond the same day.

Where the tools are blind

No tool sees everything. Know the gaps:

  • Singapore long-haul premium is effectively KrisFlyer-only, and KrisFlyer’s waitlist is not a search result. Search on singaporeair.com.
  • Qatar is best confirmed on qatarairways.com; the BA site is notorious for showing Qatar seats that do not ticket.
  • Lufthansa Group stopped releasing First Class and its cheapest business bucket to partners in June 2026. The tools will correctly show little; Miles & More is now the only route to Lufthansa First.
  • Emirates and Etihad release little to partners. Search Skywards and Etihad Guest directly.
  • United Polaris saver space moved to a member-only bucket in December 2025. Partner programs can no longer see most of it.

The next chapter covers when each airline releases seats, so you search at the right moment rather than the right tool at the wrong one.
