Part 7Playbooks

Playbook: starting in Australia and New Zealand

Cash targets to Europe and Asia, companion sales, the three award routes that still work (Aeroplan, Qatar Avios, Alaska), the truth about Qantas Classic Plus, and which currencies to hold now.

Australia is the longest-haul market in this guide and the one where the national carrier’s program helps least. Qantas points buy Qantas business at prices that track the cash fare, Classic seats to Europe and the US are released to status holders first and often not at all, and the Amex to Qantas ratio halved in December 2025. The good news is that the Gulf carriers, the Chinese carriers and three foreign award programs price Australia well. This playbook leans on them.

Lean on Gulf and Chinese cash fares and foreign programs, not Qantas points

The five steps of this playbook

  1. Cash targets and who sets them

Australia to Western Europe 4,000 to 5,500 AUD round trip, to Asia about 2,500 to 3,200. For two, price companion sales.

  2. The three award routes that work

Aeroplan to Southeast Asia, Qsuite from Perth with Avios, Alaska on Qantas to the US.

  3. Know what Qantas points are for

Classic seats are scarce. Classic Plus tracks the cash fare and rarely beats 1 to 1.5 cents per point.

  4. Hold the right currencies

Velocity and KrisFlyer, after Amex cut Qantas to 2:1 and KrisFlyer to 3:1.

    Earning transferable points

  5. Status for Australians

Etihad's paid match and the Qantas Tier Accelerator, by phone, case by case.

Step 1: cash targets and who sets them

RouteBook at or belowWho prices it
Australia to Western Europe4,000 to 5,500 AUD round tripQatar, Etihad, Vietnam Airlines, China Southern
Australia to Asiaabout 2,500 to 3,200 AUD round tripChinese carriers (Sydney to Chengdu 2,600 AUD seen), Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur, Vietnam Airlines, Singapore in promotions
Sydney to Paris via China5,300 AUDSichuan Airlines, one observation

Vietnam Airlines, China Southern and Malaysia Airlines are one-stop carriers with lie-flat seats on their A350s and 787s that undercut Qantas, Singapore and Cathay by a wide margin, with longer transits in Ho Chi Minh City, Guangzhou or Kuala Lumpur. Check the aircraft on the seat map before paying: the same airline can run a 1-2-1 and a 2-2-2 on the same route.

Companion sales are the Australian specialty. Qantas and Cathay run companion sales in the Australian market, and the research marks them as genuine and often the cheapest way for two people to fly business. China Southern’s “FLYCOMFORT” companion offer ran to 30 January 2026 for travel to 30 June. When one appears, price it against two sale fares on a Gulf carrier before you assume it wins.

Sales windows match the global pattern: early January and late August to September, plus Cathay’s long spring sale (to 30 June in 2026) and Black Friday. Qantas and Virgin Australia both sell bid upgrades (Qantas Bid Now, Virgin UpgradeMe Premium Bid); Qantas processes points upgrades first, then bids, ranked by status.

The long way out of Australia is worth doing lying down.

Step 2: the three award routes that work from Australia

Foreign programs, not Qantas, price Australian business awards well

Air Canada Aeroplan
Flies
Singapore Airlines, Thai, EVA, Air New Zealand, Australia to Southeast Asia (within Pacific 2,001 to 5,000 miles)
Points one-way
52,500
Why it works
No surcharges, 39 CAD fee. Australia to Japan 72,500. Aeroplan sells points at up to 110 percent bonus (about 1.30 US cents), so the award costs about 770 USD from zero.
Qatar Privilege ClubAvios
Flies
Qsuite Perth to Doha to London
Points one-way
90,000 off-peak
Why it works
The cheapest Qsuite route to Europe. Sydney to Doha alone is 70,000 off-peak. Very limited seats at the Saver level; Qatar’s peak calendar is unpublished. Buy Avios in a Finnair or Qatar sale at about 1.4 to 1.5 cents.
Alaska Atmos Rewards
Flies
Qantas, Sydney or Melbourne to Los Angeles, Dallas or San Francisco
Points one-way
55,000 to 85,000
Why it works
2026 sources quote both figures for the same seat; the research marks 55,000 as probably stale and the distance-band price as 85,000 First 130,000. Check alaskaair.com before moving points. Free stopover. American AAdvantage prices the same Qantas seat at a fixed 80,000.

For Australia to Europe on Star Alliance, Aeroplan now charges 100,000 to 130,000 after the June 2026 devaluation; the old 60,000 sweet spot is gone. Cathay’s Asia Miles prices Hong Kong to Sydney at 60,000 and plenty of space exists outside Australian school holidays, which makes Hong Kong a workable connection point for Europe if you hold Asia Miles.

Step 3: what Qantas points are actually for

Two award types. Classic Flight Rewards are fixed-price and scarce: seats open 353 days out at 10 am Sydney time, to Gold and Platinum first, Silver about 30 days later, Bronze about 56 days later, and long-haul premium Classic seats are often not released at all. Platinum members can request extra seats. Classic prices rose 5 to 20 percent on 5 August 2025 and business and First now carry the same carrier charges as Classic Plus. Sydney to Los Angeles business is 130,100 points plus charges; Sydney to London 166,300. Classic Plus is dynamic, Qantas metal only, tracks the cash fare and has over 20 million seats a year. It is the realistic way onto Qantas business with Qantas points, and it will rarely beat 1 to 1.5 cents per point.

So: earn Qantas points if you fly Qantas for work and want Classic upgrade priority or the oneworld round-the-world award (365,800 points in business, five stopovers). For international business on points, hold something else.

Step 4: the Amex changes and which currencies to hold

Amex Australia cut its Qantas transfer to 2:1 on 15 December 2025, and in July 2026 cut KrisFlyer and Asia Miles to 3:1. On the Platinum Charge (Ascent Premium) Velocity and Qantas are now 2:1 and KrisFlyer 3:1. The Platinum Charge costs 1,450 AUD, earns 2.25 points per dollar uncapped, and ran a welcome offer of up to 300,000 points to 3 November 2026: 150,000 Velocity points or 100,000 KrisFlyer miles, enough for one to two business one-ways, not the three that older guides promise. At about 4,500 AUD of monthly spend the card earns around 10,000 points a month, about 5,000 Velocity points, so 15 to 20 months to a 75,000 to 100,000 point award unaided. Other ratios (Cathay, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, Air New Zealand) were historically 2:1 to 3:1 and are unconfirmed for 2026.

Velocity is the useful home currency: Virgin Australia business, Qatar via Velocity, Etihad and Singapore partners, family pooling across six members, and a 2026 card promotion of up to 150,000 points that Virgin called its biggest ever. Velocity converts to KrisFlyer at 1.55:1, and in a 10 to 20 percent Amex to Velocity bonus (usually May and November) Amex to Velocity to KrisFlyer beats the direct 3:1. KrisFlyer is the other: Sydney or Melbourne to Singapore to Europe in business from about 100,000 at Saver, Singapore to Perth 42,500, Singapore to Sydney 72,000, waitlistable, and 3:1 from the Platinum Charge since July 2026. ANZ, Westpac, NAB and CommBank points reach Velocity, KrisFlyer and Asia Miles at roughly 2:1 to 3:1; Qantas only through their dedicated Qantas cards. The full card table is in Earning transferable points in your country.

Step 5: status for Australians

Etihad Guest matches about 20 programs for Australian and Indian residents only; the free Gold offer has ended and a fee applies. Qantas runs an unpublicised “Tier Accelerator” for Velocity, Airpoints, KrisFlyer, Etihad and United Gold holders: Gold after 200 status credits in three months instead of 700, by phone or email, case by case. Virgin Australia excludes Lite fares from bids; Air New Zealand’s OneUp closes three days out and excludes long-haul X-class fares.

The seat you are shown is not always the seat you can book

Partners (American, BA, Alaska, Cathay) see Qantas Classic seats only, and long-haul business Classic seats are rare. If alaskaair.com or aa.com shows Qantas business to Los Angeles ten months out, verify on qantas.com before transferring; if a Qantas seat exists at all, book it in American (free cancellation and a free hold) rather than in a program that charges to redeposit.

DataAustralia to Europe fare ranges observed in 2026; this chapter's worked example

As ofOct 8, 2026

  • Cash benchmark: Australia to Europe sale range 4,000 to 5,500 AUD round trip. Say 4,500 AUD, inside the range, on Qatar in a sale.
  • Round trip on points: 2 × 90,000 Avios bought at about 1.41 US cents is about 2,540 USD plus around 260 USD in taxes, roughly 4,200 AUD at the research’s rate. The margin over a 4,500 AUD sale fare is thin and the points are non-refundable. Cash, or cash out and points back.
  • One-way on points: 90,000 Avios plus about 130 USD. Bought from zero, about 1,400 USD, against a one-way cash fare that on this market runs 70 to 90 percent of the round trip. Points win by a wide margin.
  • Protect: Qatar cancels for 25 USD more than 24 hours out. Book the first off-peak Qsuite seat you find on qatarairways.com, then alert for better dates.

What to do if it fails

  1. No Qsuite Saver space from Perth: search Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide to Doha, and try the Doha to London segment separately. Then price Etihad through Aeroplan or Etihad Guest.
  2. Aeroplan shows nothing to Southeast Asia on Singapore or Thai: EVA and Air New Zealand are on the same chart band; so is a Singapore to Europe KrisFlyer waitlist as a second leg.
  3. Fixed dates in Australian school holidays: cash sale fare on a Chinese carrier or Vietnam Airlines, business on the overnight legs only (see Mixed cabins: pay for lie-flat only where you sleep).
  4. Two travelers: wait for a companion sale, or two Velocity or KrisFlyer awards, which release in pairs more often than Qantas does.
  5. Inside three weeks: Qantas Bid Now on a cash economy ticket (Perth to Singapore minimum about 545 AUD, one observation), or the last-minute playbook in the next chapter.

Next: the same decisions organized by the shape of the trip rather than where you live.
