Airlines file fares per origin market, not per route. The identical Doha to Bangkok flights cost around 1,800 EUR when the ticket starts in Rome and over 3,000 when it starts in London. The Rome market is price-sensitive, the carrier is a weaker brand there, and local competition is heavier. If you can get to Rome for 60 EUR, you can buy the Rome price.
That is origin arbitrage. Combined with ticket shaping (open-jaws, nested tickets), it is the most powerful cash technique for anyone making two or more long-haul trips a year.
Why an origin is cheap
- Weak home carrier or no nonstop competitor. Scandinavia to Asia: SAS gave up most Asian long-haul, so Qatar, Finnair and Chinese carriers compete on price.
- Low local purchasing power. Cairo, Colombo, Jakarta, Delhi, Bogotá: carriers file low local fares and police them with point-of-sale rules.
- Hub carriers dumping capacity. Gulf carriers, Turkish and Chinese airlines route Europe to Asia through their hubs and price aggressively in secondary markets.
- Soft seasonal demand. Italy from November to March, Scandinavia in January and February.

Markets that used to be cheap and are not reliable in 2026: Tel Aviv (capacity constraints keep fares high) and Colombo as a true origin (it is now a cheap destination instead). Mexico City and Bogotá are cheap to fly to from Europe; fares starting there are ordinary.
Positioning flights
Buy a separate cheap ticket to the cheap origin, then fly the business ticket from there. Berlin to Oslo 40 EUR, London to Dublin 30 GBP, Paris to Milan 35 EUR, London to Cairo 120 GBP.
Rules:
- Position the day before, or leave at least five to six hours. Never a tight same-day connection on separate tickets.
- Total cost = positioning + business fare + hotel if needed. The arbitrage should beat the home-market fare by at least 300 to 400 EUR per person to be worth the friction.
- You must fly the first segment from the cheap origin. Skipping it cancels the whole ticket on every airline (Spain’s courts are the one exception, and only for Spanish bookings).
- The return ends at the cheap origin. Either position home again, or use an open-jaw so the ticket ends nearer home.
Open-jaw tickets
One ticket, into A, home from B. Oslo to Bangkok out, Phuket to Oslo back. Dublin to New York out, Boston to Dublin back. Priced as half of each round trip, fully supported by every booking engine, allowed by most sale fares (Oman Air and Qatar sale fares explicitly). It is also the clean way to end a cheap-origin ticket closer to home: ex-Dublin fares via London can often return to London or Madrid for a modest surcharge.
Nested tickets for frequent travelers
Two overlapping round trips, each half used on a different trip:
- Ticket 1: New York to Paris 1 June, Paris to New York 16 August
- Ticket 2: Paris to New York 4 June, New York to Paris 11 August
Two overlapping round trips cover two summer trips at leisure-fare prices
Each ticket meets its minimum stay; each trip uses one half of each ticket
1 June to 16 August

| Row | Marker or window | Days |

Two summer trips at leisure-fare prices, each ticket satisfying its minimum-stay rules. For someone who commutes between Bangkok and Europe twice a year, the same logic applies: one ticket starting in Bangkok, one starting in Frankfurt, each half used on a different journey.
United rewrote its contract of carriage to ban any combination of coupons from two or more tickets used “for the purpose of circumventing fares, inventory controls or tariff rules”. Penalties include refusal of transport and billing the fare difference. Nest tickets on different airlines or alliances so no single carrier’s system sees the pattern. Most carriers have older, narrower rules aimed only at Saturday-night-stay avoidance.
The risks of separate tickets, and the fixes
| Risk | Fix |
|---|---|
| Missed positioning flight means a no-show on the business ticket, which cancels it, usually without refund | Position the day before. Buy the positioning flight on a changeable fare, or have a backup flight identified. |
| No through-checked bags across tickets | Carry-on where possible. Some Star Alliance and oneworld carriers will through-check on request; it is discretionary. |
| No protection on disruption: if the business flight cancels, the airline rebooks you from the cheap origin, not from home | Build a buffer day. Travel insurance that covers missed connections on separate tickets. |
| Visa or entry rules at the positioning point (Cairo, for example) | Check before you buy. Transit without leaving the airport often needs no visa; an overnight does. |
| EU261 compensation applies per ticket, not per journey | Nothing to fix; just know it. |
| OTA-only fares (the ex-Dublin 1,062 EUR fare was OTA-only) can take hours to ticket | Wait for the 13-digit e-ticket number before buying the positioning flight. |
A worked example
Frankfurt resident, two trips to Bangkok a year, flexible by a few days.
- Frankfurt to Bangkok round trip, Qatar, normal pricing: about 2,900 EUR.
- Rome to Bangkok round trip, Qatar sale fare: about 1,800 EUR. Frankfurt to Rome round trip on Ryanair the day before: 90 EUR. One night in Rome: 110 EUR. Total: 2,000 EUR. Saving: 900 EUR, plus a night in Rome.
- For two trips a year, a nested pair (one ticket ex-Rome, one ex-Bangkok on a different carrier) brings each trip to roughly 1,700 EUR all-in.
Starting in Rome saves 900 EUR on the same Qatar flights to Bangkok
Business round trip via Doha, by the city the ticket starts in
- over 3,000 EUR
- about 2,900 EUR
- 90 EUR
- about 1,800 EURBest fare
Numbers
| Route | Kind | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| London to Bangkok via Doha. Qatar, the same Doha to Bangkok flights | Normal cash fare | over 3,000 EUR |
| Frankfurt to Bangkok via Doha. Qatar, normal pricing | Normal cash fare | about 2,900 EUR |
| Frankfurt to Rome. Ryanair round trip the day before, plus one night in Rome at 110 EUR | Positioning flight | 90 EUR |
| Rome to Bangkok via Doha. Qatar sale fare; 2,000 EUR all-in with positioning and the hotel | Cheaper origin fare | about 1,800 EUR |
DataThis chapter's worked example, Qatar fares seen in 2026
As ofOct 8, 2026
The friction is real: an extra flight, a night away, bags you carry yourself. For a 900 EUR saving most people take it. For 200 EUR, they should not.
The next chapter covers the extreme end of cash fares: mistakes and flash sales.
