Mixed cabins: pay for lie-flat only where you sleep

Business on the overnight leg, premium economy by day. How mixed-cabin tickets price, which airlines make premium economy the smarter buy, and the one-way pricing map.

8 min readSources at the end

A business class seat earns its price on one kind of flight: the overnight one, where lying flat is the difference between arriving functional and arriving wrecked. On a daytime flight, a good premium economy seat delivers most of the comfort for 40 to 55 percent of the business fare. Paying for lie-flat on both directions of a round trip is paying for something you only use once.

How mixed-cabin tickets price

On most carriers, a round trip with business one way and premium economy or economy the other prices as half the cheapest business round trip plus half the cheapest premium economy or economy round trip. A Milan to Miami ticket with business out and economy back costs roughly 55 to 60 percent of the full business round trip.

Where to build it:

  • ITA Matrix lets you set the cabin per leg and shows the fare construction.
  • Google Flights: search the business round trip, then re-run as multi-city with a different cabin on each leg.
  • Airline sites: BA, Lufthansa, Air France, Qatar and most others let you choose the cabin per direction.

Within one itinerary, the same logic applies to connecting legs: business on the long-haul, economy on the three-hour feeder. Gulf and Asian carriers usually book the short leg in business automatically when you buy the long-haul in business, but European carriers sell “business long-haul, economy intra-Europe” fares that are materially cheaper. Check the price difference before paying.

Check every segment before paying

Mixed-cabin pricing on some airline sites and on award bookings can quietly put the long leg in the lower cabin. Read the cabin per segment on the review page, not the headline.

On the daytime leg, a good premium economy seat does the job for 40 to 55 percent of the business fare.

Where premium economy is the smarter buy

Premium economy sits at 1.4 to 2 times economy; business is 2 to 3.5 times premium economy. The airlines where the gap is widest and the premium economy seat is best (per 2026 comparisons):

AirlineWhy premium economy wins by day
EVA AirBusiness is 3 to 4 times premium economy; EVA’s premium economy ranks top five globally.
JALBusiness 2 to 2.5 times premium economy; wide, well-padded premium seat.
EmiratesNew premium economy is excellent; business on the 777 is a 2-3-2 you do not want anyway.
Air New ZealandAmong the best premium economy seats flying.
Virgin AtlanticGood premium economy; Upper Class pricing often steep.
Singapore AirlinesEurope promotions put premium economy at about 2,500 SGD against 5,300 to 6,500 in business.

Rule: premium economy for daytime flights and flights under about eight hours; business for overnight flights where sleep matters.

Low-cost lie-flat as the “day leg”

Several low-cost long-haul carriers sell lie-flat or near-lie-flat cabins at prices below legacy premium economy: AirAsia X Kuala Lumpur to London via Bahrain around 570 GBP one-way (flatbed), T’way Seoul to Frankfurt, Paris, Rome and Barcelona 900 to 1,000 GBP one-way (lie-flat), Norse Premium Bangkok to London about 500 GBP, Scoot ScootPlus Singapore to Athens or Vienna about 470 GBP. No lounge, no miles, strict change rules, per-direction pricing. A legacy business one-way on the overnight leg plus a low-cost lie-flat on the way back is a combination worth pricing.

The one-way pricing map

Who penalizes one-ways decides whether “business one way” is cheap or a trap.

DataGoing, why one-way flights are expensive; Premium-Flights, Oct 2026

As ofOct 8, 2026

Asia-originating one-ways are occasionally bargains (SAS Bangkok to Europe at 900 to 1,100 USD one-way in October 2026 was news precisely because it was cheap).

If you only need business one way

In order:

  1. Search one-ways from the destination country’s point of sale. Asia-originating one-ways are sometimes cheaper than Europe-originating ones for the same flight.
  2. Build the mixed-cabin round trip above, with business on the overnight direction.
  3. Pair a cash leg with a points leg. Points programs price one-ways at half a round trip, which is exactly where legacy cash fares are worst. The Points vs cash tool compares the two.
  4. Buy the round trip and use both halves, by building a second trip around the return rather than throwing it away. Throwaway ticketing breaches the contract of carriage; see Booking channels: direct, OTA, consolidator, and the grey zone.

A worked example

London to Bangkok, two people, outbound overnight, return daytime via Doha.

  • Full business round trip, Qatar, normal pricing: about 3,400 GBP each.
  • Mixed: business out (half of a 3,400 round trip, 1,700), premium economy or economy back (half of a 1,100 economy round trip, 550). About 2,250 GBP each. Saving: 1,150 GBP each, 2,300 for two.
  • Alternative: business out on a Qatar sale from Rome (about 1,800 EUR round trip would be overkill); instead a business one-way award via Avios (Qsuite Europe to Doha 42,500 plus Doha to Bangkok) and a cheap economy cash return. Price both; the award wins when seats exist and you hold or can buy Avios in a sale.
