Starting in Asia flips the usual advice. The Gulf and Chinese carriers that make Europe cheap for Europeans file the same low fares in the other direction, so cash to Europe from Manila or Bangkok is often cheaper than from Frankfurt. Points are harder: the home programs release their best seats to their own members, bank points convert at worse ratios than in the US, and Western sweet spots price Asia as the expensive end. This playbook works with that.
Know the cash floor, then use the programs that see seats from here
The six steps of this playbook
Know the cash floor from your city
Southeast Asia to Western Europe: 1,900 to 2,600 USD round trip. Under that, book.
The worked example, Bangkok to Zurich
Cash wins the round trip, points win the one-way. Price both trip shapes before deciding.
Know which program sees seats from Asia
Thai via United, Turkish via Aeroplan, Qsuite via Avios, Finnair, Cathay from Hong Kong, ANA and JAL from Tokyo.
Use the KrisFlyer waitlist
Saver and Advantage awards waitlist to 21 days out; results typically by day 14. Hold a confirmed backup.
Know your local card ecosystem
8 to 14 months to a business one-way in Singapore, 15 to 20 in Thailand.
Use Marriott as the universal route
60,000 Bonvoy points become 25,000 airline miles. Top up a balance; do not fund a whole award.

Step 1: know the cash floor from your city
Round-trip business to Western Europe, deal level, 2026:
Asia's deal fares to Europe undercut the 2,200 to 2,800 USD nonstops
Business to Western Europe, round trip unless marked one-way, observed in 2026
- 1,270 USD
- 900 to 1,100 USD one‑way
- 773 EUR one‑way
- about 2,000 USD
- 2,200 to 2,800 USD
Numbers

|---|---|---|
| Manila to Milan via Bahrain. Saudia, September 2026 | Deal fare | 1,270 USD |
| Bangkok to Western Europe. SAS, October 2026 | Deal fare | 900 to 1,100 USD one-way |

DataPremium-Flights, Saudia Manila to Milan (Sep 2026) and SAS Bangkok one-way (Oct 2026)
As ofOct 8, 2026
| From | Observed fare | Carrier | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manila | 1,270 USD to Milan | Saudia via Bahrain | September 2026. Dry airline, solid seat. |
| Bangkok | 900 to 1,100 USD one-way to Europe | SAS | October 2026. Newsworthy because Asia-origin one-ways are rarely cheap. |
| Singapore | 773 EUR one-way to Munich or Vienna | Saudia | Another one-way exception. |
| Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur | about 2,000 USD | Air Astana via Almaty or Astana | Genuinely good; one or two stops. |
| Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi | 2,200 to 2,800 USD | Thai, Vietnam Airlines nonstops | The price of a nonstop. |
| Hong Kong | Cathay’s own fares rarely cheap ex-Europe; ex-Hong Kong is where Cathay’s sales have value | Cathay | Spring sale to 30 June in 2026, Black Friday. |
For daytime legs, the low-cost cabins beat all of these: AirAsia X Kuala Lumpur to London Gatwick via Bahrain about 570 GBP one-way (flatbed), Scoot’s ScootPlus recliner Singapore to Athens or Vienna about 470 GBP, Norse Premium Bangkok to London about 500 GBP. No lounge, no miles, strict changes. The airlines that are cheap on purpose has the aircraft and transit notes.
The reference range for Southeast Asia to Western Europe is 1,900 to 2,600 USD round trip. Under that, book. Check the airline’s local-country site in local currency; Singapore Airlines promo codes tied to Singapore bank cards and Etihad’s India sales are real point-of-sale differences, as explained in Error fares, flash deals and point-of-sale tricks.

Step 2: the worked example, Bangkok to Zurich in November
A real search in October 2026:
Same trip, two answers: cash wins the round trip, points win the one-way
Bangkok to Zurich, business, November 2026, one traveler. Searched in October 2026.
Numbers
| Option | Kind | All-in (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Round trip: Swiss nonstop, published fare | Published fare | 4,900 |
| Round trip: Aeroplan award, 2 x 92,500 points bought at 1.35 cents. Loses to the Etihad fare by around 450 USD before taxes | Award with points | 2,500 + taxes |
| Round trip: Etihad via Abu Dhabi, cash. Found on Google Flights | Sale or cheap cash fare | 2,050 |
| One-way: Etihad, cheapest cash business | Normal cash fare | 2,400 |
| One-way: Turkish via Istanbul, Aeroplan, 92,500 points bought. 2.5 cents per point against the one-way cash fare | Award with points | 1,250 + taxes |
DataGoogle Flights, aeroplan.com
As ofOct 8, 2026
- Round trip. Swiss nonstop published about 4,900 USD. Etihad via Abu Dhabi about 2,050 USD on Google Flights. An Aeroplan award both ways costs 2 × 92,500 points; with points bought at 1.35 cents that is about 2,500 USD plus taxes, so the award loses by around 450 USD before taxes are added. Cash wins.
- One-way. Cheapest one-way business about 2,400 USD (Etihad). Turkish via Istanbul through Aeroplan: 92,500 points plus about 120 USD, value (2,400 − 120) ÷ 92,500 = 2.5 cents per point. Bought points bring the seat to about 1,250 USD plus taxes. Points win clearly.
Same traveler, same month, two right answers. Run the Points vs cash tool on the exact trip shape before deciding.
Step 3: which program sees seats from Asia
- Thai Airways business and First via United. Thai is stingy to almost every partner and often releases only one to three weeks before departure, but United sees far more Thai space than anyone else and books it online. Search united.com, not Aeroplan. United cancels awards free, so book and keep improving. Citi ThankYou transfers to Thai’s own Royal Orchid Plus 1:1, but ROP is a phone program with weak online tools.
- Turkish via Aeroplan. Bangkok or Singapore to Europe via Istanbul in the 5,001 to 7,000 mile band is 92,500 points, no surcharges. Turkish releases business generously and in multiples. Aeroplan has no hold but 24 hours of free cancellation.
- Qatar Qsuite via Avios. Asia to Europe via Doha priced at 75,000 Avios in 2026 sources, with low Asia-origin taxes. Doha to Bangkok alone is 42,500, Doha to Singapore 50,000, Doha to Tokyo 60,000. Buy Avios in a Finnair or Qatar 50 percent sale (about 1.4 to 1.5 cents) and book on qatarairways.com, where the seats are real.
- Finnair via Avios. Singapore, Bangkok or Tokyo to Helsinki 62,500 Avios plus about 100 to 120 EUR, with a free Helsinki stopover on Finnair Plus bookings. Finnair added Melbourne via Bangkok in October 2026.
- Cathay from Hong Kong. Asia Miles members see more First and business than partners and get about 30 days’ head start. Hong Kong to Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok or Singapore in business is 27,000 Asia Miles; Hong Kong to Sydney 60,000; Hong Kong to London 91,000 under the chart effective 1 May 2026.
- ANA and JAL from Tokyo. Both give their own members first access at 355 to 360 days. ANA prices round trips only on its own metal (100,000 miles round trip to North America in low season). JAL Mileage Bank prices US to Tokyo at 55,000 one-way in low season and new accounts wait 60 days before redeeming.
Step 4: the KrisFlyer waitlist, as it really works
Singapore releases long-haul business, First and Suites almost exclusively to KrisFlyer members. Saver and Advantage awards can be waitlisted; “Access” awards (dynamic, since November 2025) cannot. The waitlist stays open to 21 days before departure and clears by status priority, with results typically by day 14. Clearance rates fell in 2026 because Access now sells the leftover seats. Waitlist several flights at once; you only need miles in the account for the most expensive. Singapore to London business Saver is 108,500 miles; Singapore to Tokyo 54,500; Singapore to Sydney 72,000. Never transfer bank points just to join a waitlist, and hold a confirmed backup elsewhere.
Step 5: your local card ecosystem
The detail is in Earning transferable points in your country. The shape, country by country:
Thailand. No true flexible currency. Bank points from UOB, KTC, KBank, Krungsri, SCB and ttb convert to Royal Orchid Plus, KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Avios and others at fixed ratios, usually with a conversion fee. Blended cost is about 20 THB per mile, so around 5,000 miles a month at 100,000 THB of spend and 15 to 20 months to a long-haul business one-way. The UOB KrisFlyer Elite card at 12.50 THB per mile on Singapore Airlines spend is the standout.
Singapore. The deepest bank-points market in Asia. HSBC TravelOne (20-plus partners, no transfer fee), UOB, Citi, DBS and OCBC convert at 1.2 to 1.4 miles per dollar locally and 2.2 to 2.4 overseas, with 4-mile category cards (HSBC Revolution) lifting the blend. Amex Singapore devalued its conversions by 22 to 50 percent on 23 February 2026 and is now a niche choice. Expect 6,000 to 9,000 miles a month and 8 to 14 months to a business one-way; welcome bonuses are small.
Hong Kong. Asia Miles-centric at 2 to 6 HKD per mile. The Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard earns at 2 HKD per mile on Cathay spend, HSBC EveryMile at 2 HKD on designated categories, DBS Black World up to 80,000 miles of welcome offer. About 6,000 to 8,000 miles a month, 7 to 10 months to a long-haul business one-way.
Japan. Amex Platinum (165,000 JPY a year) with Membership Rewards Plus moves 1,000 points to 1,000 ANA miles; JAL is not an Amex partner. The Marriott Bonvoy Amex Premium (49,500 JPY) is the universal JAL and ANA earner at 3 points per 100 yen. ANA Amex Gold rose to 42,900 JPY in September 2026. Reckon 13 to 16 months to a business award unaided, longer because ANA prices round trips.
Step 6: Marriott as the universal route
Marriott Bonvoy transfers to 37 to 40 airlines at 3:1 with 5,000 bonus miles per 60,000 moved, so 60,000 Bonvoy becomes 25,000 miles in ANA, JAL, KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Qatar, Thai, Alaska or Korean Air. It is the only way to buy ANA, JAL, KrisFlyer or Cathay miles outright: bought at a 55 percent bonus, Bonvoy costs about 0.81 cents, which is about 1.94 cents per airline mile. That is marginal, so use it to top up a balance that is close, not to fund a whole award. Transfers take one to seven days; do them before the seat appears, not after.
Aeroplan’s June 2026 devaluation pushed Europe to Asia over 7,001 miles to 100,000 to 130,000 points and the US to Southeast Asia to 102,500. Asia-origin taxes are low, which helps, but the big Western “under 60,000” transatlantic prices do not exist for your routes. Compare Qatar Avios (75,000), Finnair (62,500) and Turkish via Aeroplan (92,500) before anything else.
What to do if it fails
- No award space to Europe: price the Saudia, Air Astana or Gulf Air cash fare from your city, then the one-way exceptions (SAS from Bangkok, Saudia from Singapore). A 1,270 USD round trip beats every award in this chapter.
- Thai shows nothing on United: set a continuous alert and check again at T-21, T-14 and T-7, which is when Thai releases.
- KrisFlyer waitlist does not clear by day 14: fall back to the confirmed seat you booked speculatively, or price a KrisFlyer upgrade on an Economy Standard fare (not Lite), which is eligible.
- Family or group: Turkish and Starlux release multiple seats; see Playbook by trip type.
- Everything is full inside three weeks: Thai’s airport standby cash upgrade and Malaysia’s Last Minute Upgrade (to three hours before) are the Asian versions of the gate upgrade.
Next: Australia and New Zealand, where the distances are longer and the home programs are even less generous.
