Part 2Cash fares

The airlines that are cheap on purpose

Gulf, Chinese, Central Asian and second-tier carriers whose business fares undercut the big names by 30 to 60 percent, with honest notes on seats, service and transit.

The cheapest lie-flat seat between Europe and Asia in 2026 was not on a sale. It was Oman Air’s everyday fare from Rome to Mumbai at 1,365 EUR, in a suite with a door. Several airlines price business class 30 to 60 percent below Lufthansa, Swiss, Singapore or Cathay as a matter of policy, because they are selling a one-stop product from a hub nobody is loyal to. Some of them are excellent.

Starlux has no European routes; it matters for US West Coast to Asia (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle to Taipei at 2,500 to 3,500 USD, excellent product).

A vast transit terminal at night with indoor palm trees and wide-body aircraft beyond the glass.
A change of planes in a big hub is often all that stands between you and a lie-flat seat at 30 to 60 percent off.

Low-cost lie-flat and near-lie-flat

For the budget-minded, several low-cost carriers now sell premium cabins that beat legacy premium economy on price and sometimes match legacy business on the seat:

  • AirAsia X Kuala Lumpur to London Gatwick via Bahrain, flatbed, about 570 GBP one-way.
  • T’way Seoul to Frankfurt, Paris, Rome and Barcelona, lie-flat, 900 to 1,000 GBP one-way.
  • Norse Premium (recliner) Bangkok to London about 500 GBP one-way.
  • Scoot ScootPlus (recliner) Singapore to Athens or Vienna about 470 GBP one-way.

No lounge, no miles, strict change rules. For a daytime flight, often the smartest money in the sky.

How to read a cheap carrier

Three questions decide whether a cheap fare is a bargain or a mistake:

  1. Which aircraft? The seat map on the booking page or on aerolopa.com tells you whether you are getting 1-2-1 suites or a 2-3-2 middle seat. The same airline, same route, can operate both.
  2. How long is the transit, and where? Doha, Istanbul, Muscat and Bahrain are quick and pleasant. Guangzhou, Shanghai, Addis and Ashgabat are not. A four-hour overnight transit in a poor terminal undoes the value of the lie-flat seat.
  3. What does the fare include? Lounge access, seat selection, baggage, changes. “Light” fares are fine for most trips; just know what you bought.
Mileage credit on cheap fares

Deep-discount business fares earn less: often 100 to 125 percent of distance instead of 150 to 200, and sometimes nothing in a partner program. Before booking, check the earning chart for the fare class (shown on the fare rules) against the program you plan to credit. Chinese carriers’ business fares credit well to Star Alliance and SkyTeam partners; Gulf carriers’ deep buckets often credit poorly to partners.

Next: splitting a trip so you pay for lie-flat only where you will actually sleep.
