Europe has the best cash fares in the world and some of the worst points programs. The Gulf and Chinese carriers price Europe to Asia at 1,300 to 2,000 EUR from the right city, while the home programs (Miles & More, BA Club on BA metal, Flying Blue Standard) add hundreds of euros in surcharges to every award. The plan for a European is therefore cash-led, with points reserved for one-ways, Qsuite and the few partner charts that still work.
Pick the city first, then the sale, then the program
The six steps of this playbook
Pick the origin before the airline
The same Qatar flights to Bangkok cost about 1,800 EUR from Rome and over 3,000 EUR from London. Position when it saves 300 to 400 EUR per person.
Book inside the two windows
Early to mid January and late August to early October. Etihad runs something every six to eight weeks.
Points, the European way
Cheap Avios for Qsuite, Aeroplan for Star Alliance to Asia, Iberia for the Atlantic.
Miles & More, honestly
Miles & More surcharges are heavy and partners rarely see Lufthansa saver business since June 2026. Keep Miles & More for Lufthansa First.
The UK voucher
The BA Amex Premium Plus Companion Voucher pays off on long-haul business and not much else.
Buy status if it saves more than it costs
Flying Blue matches from 89 EUR. Status buys lounges and queue position, not award space.

Step 1: pick the origin before you pick the airline
Airlines file fares per origin market. The same Qatar flights to Bangkok cost about 1,800 EUR from Rome and over 3,000 EUR from London. Your home airport is only the starting point if positioning costs more than it saves.

As ofOct 8, 2026
Frankfurt resident, Bangkok, flexible by a few days. Frankfurt to Bangkok on Qatar at normal pricing: about 2,900 EUR. Rome to Bangkok in a Qatar sale: about 1,800 EUR. Frankfurt to Rome round trip on Ryanair the day before: 90 EUR. One night in Rome: 110 EUR. Total 2,000 EUR, saving 900 EUR, plus an evening in Rome. For two trips a year, a nested pair (one ticket ex-Rome, one ex-Bangkok, on different carriers) brings each trip to roughly 1,700 EUR all-in.

Step 2: book inside the two windows
Premium sales cluster in early to mid January (BA’s largest sale opens around 6 January and runs about three weeks; Virgin’s Boxing Day sale runs into late January; Finnair, Qatar and Emirates discount) and late August to early October (Air France’s Rendez-Vous 10 to 23 September 2026; BA 27 August to 29 September; Virgin 27 August to 30 September; TAP’s 48-hour flashes 14 to 17 September; Qatar’s autumn sale 1 to 4 October). Etihad runs something roughly every six to eight weeks regardless. Set two calendar reminders and run your tracked searches in those weeks. The airline-by-airline pattern is in Cash fare sales and when they happen.
Step 3: points, the European way
Buy Avios cheaply, spend them on Qatar. Avios move free and instantly between BA, Qatar, Iberia, Finnair and Aer Lingus. Finnair Plus sells them with a 50 percent bonus in May and in late September, and its storefront can be switched to Japanese yen, which priced at about 1.41 US cents per Avios in September 2026 (about 1.23 euro cents). Qatar Privilege Club’s own 50 percent sales landed at 1.53 cents. Then redeem on Qsuite: Europe to Doha 42,500 Avios off-peak (55,000 peak) with no fuel surcharges, and Doha to Bangkok another 42,500. Budget about 85,000 for Europe to Southeast Asia in a suite with a door; a through-priced award may be lower, which the research could not confirm. The yen trick is unofficial and could close at any time.
Aeroplan for Star Alliance to Asia. 92,500 points one-way in the 5,001 to 7,000 mile band (London to Tokyo, Frankfurt to Bangkok via Istanbul), no surcharges, 39 CAD fee. Turkish releases business generously and had mass releases for Istanbul routes for October 2026 to February 2027. Aeroplan sold points at up to 110 percent bonus in July to August 2026, about 1.30 US cents each; at that price the award is about 1,290 USD all-in, which beats any one-way cash fare on the route. Do not buy at the 30 percent discount tier.
Iberia for the Atlantic. Madrid to the US East Coast 40,500 Avios off-peak plus 150 to 290 USD in taxes from the European side. Position to Madrid on a cheap intra-Europe ticket.
Flying Blue is useful only on Promo Rewards (45,000 business one-way when your city is listed, published the 1st of each month) or at the 60,000 “Light” floor; Standard rose to 75,000 on 8 September 2026 and surcharges are 250 to 400 USD one-way.
Step 4: Miles & More, honestly
Three facts decide it. First, surcharges: the Frankfurt to New York business round trip carried 1,495 EUR in carrier charges by October 2026, up from 930 EUR in February; First carried 1,790 EUR. Partner programs such as Aeroplan and LifeMiles charge none, but since 1 June 2026 Lufthansa Group releases almost no saver business to them, so treat a Lufthansa, Swiss or Austrian seat there as a rare find and look at TAP, LOT or Turkish on the same points instead. Second, Miles & More is now the only program that can book Lufthansa First, including Allegris First, at about 91,000 miles plus 800 to 900 EUR one-way; at a 9,000 USD cash fare that is still around 9 cents per mile. Third, earning: Germany has a backdoor. Amex Membership Rewards does not transfer to Miles & More directly, but Payback does, 1:1 with regular 20 to 30 percent bonuses, so Amex to Payback to Miles & More works out at 3 points per mile (about 2.3 with a bonus). Austria and Switzerland have no equivalent; Swiss residents use the Swisscard or Cornèrcard Miles & More duos.
Step 5: the UK voucher, in one paragraph
The British Airways Amex Premium Plus (300 GBP a year, earning cut to 1.25 Avios per pound in 2026) issues a Companion Voucher after 15,000 GBP of spend, valid 24 months in all cabins, or 50 percent off Avios if you travel alone. Two Club Suite seats to New York cost around 100,000 Avios plus about 700 GBP in fees with the voucher. The fees are the catch: BA’s surcharges rose again on 27 May 2026, so the voucher pays off on long-haul business and not much else. Virgin’s Reward+ card (160 GBP) issues a 75,000 or 150,000 point voucher at 10,000 GBP of spend; Virgin points also buy ANA and Delta One. Amex Platinum UK’s bonus oscillated between 50,000 and 85,000 in 2025 to 2026. The UK is also where ex-Dublin positioning pays twice: no Air Passenger Duty and aggressive BA and American filings.
Step 6: buy status if it saves you more than it costs
Flying Blue sells a status match in Germany, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy (never France or the Netherlands): Silver 89 EUR, Gold 199 EUR, Platinum 349 EUR, once per lifetime, 12 months. Gold is SkyTeam Elite Plus: lounges on Air France, KLM and Delta long-haul and better upgrade priority. Miles & More matches BA, Iberia and ITA elites for 99 EUR until 28 February 2027. Turkish runs an unofficial free challenge if you hold oneworld Emerald or SkyTeam Elite Plus and have one past Turkish flight credited. None of this opens partner award space; it buys comfort and queue position.
Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian stopped releasing First Class and saver (“I” bucket) business to every partner program. Aeroplan, United, LifeMiles and Avianca no longer see Lufthansa First, and close-in business space from the group is gone for partners. Expect your award searches to show Turkish, TAP, LOT and Brussels instead. Watch whether the block is lifted after peak season; there has been no announcement either way.
What to do if it fails
- The sale fare has gone from your city: re-run the search from Oslo, Rome, Milan, Dublin and Budapest before you conclude it has gone. Deal sites (travel-dealz.com, premium-flights.com) show the fare class and ticketing deadline.
- No Qsuite space at 42,500: check qatarairways.com directly, not the BA site, which shows Qatar seats that do not ticket. Try Doha-origin nonstops and the connection via Doha as one search.
- Aeroplan shows nothing: swap to oneworld (Avios on Qatar or Finnair’s Helsinki to Asia at 62,500) and then to the non-aligned carriers.
- You need Lufthansa First: it is Miles & More or cash. Price the Swiss business fare plus a paid upgrade to First at the airport, which Swiss sells.
- Nothing works inside three weeks: upgrade bids and the Lufthansa app’s fixed-price upgrades, covered in Upgrade bidding: the airlines, the windows, the math and Playbook by trip type.
Next, the same plan written for travelers starting in Asia, where the cheap carriers and the award windows are different.
