Part 7Playbooks

Playbook: starting in North America

A step-by-step plan for US and Canadian travelers: cash targets and award prices for the Atlantic and the Pacific, the card ecosystem in one paragraph, status challenges, and where to park a speculative booking.

9 min readSources at the end

North America is the easiest place in the world to fly business class for less, and the easiest place to overpay. Published fares are the highest anywhere, which makes the published-fare “savings” look enormous, while the real tools (card bonuses at 1:1, fixed partner charts, free cancellation at two airlines) are better than any other region has. This playbook puts them in order.

Benchmark cash first, book speculatively last

The six steps of this playbook

  1. Fix the trip shape and benchmark cash

Decide one-way or round trip, then write down the cheapest business round trip. Inside the target band, buy it.

    Google FlightsCash fare sales

  2. The transatlantic plan

Cash in the January and late August to September sales. One-way awards from 40,500 Avios on Iberia.

  3. The transpacific plan

Qatar and Starlux sales for cash. Aeroplan from 55,000 to Tokyo or Seoul, Alaska on JAL and Starlux.

  4. The card ecosystem

Five currencies move 1:1. One welcome bonus funds a long-haul business one-way.

    Earning transferable points

  5. Take a free status challenge

American, Delta, United and Alaska all run one. Status helps bids and upgrades, not award space.

    Status: the cheap routes in

  6. Book speculatively, then improve

Book in American, United or Alaska, which cancel free or for a small fee, then trade up.

    Holds and cancellations

Step 1: fix the trip shape and benchmark cash

Before anything else, decide one-way or round trip and run Google Flights for your route in Business, date grid open, two nearby airports each end. Write the cheapest round trip down. The 2026 targets from Cash fare sales and when they happen:

Book a round trip when the fare falls inside these bands

If a round-trip fare sits inside those bands, buy it. Points rarely beat a sale fare on a round trip, as The five ways to pay less, compared explains. If you need a one-way, or the dates are peak, or the fare is 50 percent above the band, go to steps 2 and 3.

From North America, the Atlantic and the Pacific each get their own plan.

Step 2: the transatlantic plan

Cash. The two sale windows are early January and late August to September. Air France’s “Rendez-Vous” ran 10 to 23 September in 2026; US to Paris business under 1,200 USD round trip appeared in 2026 deal alerts. Lufthansa Group sale fares from about 1,700 USD book into “Business Light” (no seat selection, reduced baggage). One-ways on this market are the exception to the usual rule: 1,200 to 2,000 USD one-way is common in 2026 because BA, American, Delta, United, Air France and Virgin now price many one-ways at about half the round trip.

Points, one-way prices in October 2026, all with low or no surcharges unless noted:

Iberia ClubAvios

No surcharges. Prices now vary by route and even by search path after the April 2026 repricing. Poor cancellation terms.

Avoid British Airways metal with Avios (about 500 USD surcharges each way) and Lufthansa Group via Miles & More for business (the surcharge on a Frankfurt to New York round trip reached 1,495 EUR in October 2026).

Step 3: the transpacific plan

Cash. Qatar’s spring sale put Qsuite at 2,999 USD round trip ex-US for travel to 31 October 2026. Starlux sells Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle to Taipei at 2,500 to 3,500 USD, and the product is excellent. Saudia New York to Bangkok at 2,806 USD was a 2025 observation.

Points:

Aeroplan
Points one-way

Flies
ANA, Air Canada, Asiana from Vancouver, Seattle or Portland to Tokyo or Seoul (under 5,000 miles)

Step 4: the card ecosystem, in one paragraph

Five transferable currencies (Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou, Capital One, Bilt) move 1:1 into most of the programs above, and welcome bonuses of 75,000 to 175,000 points are normal in 2026 (Amex Platinum up to 175,000 at an 895 USD fee, Chase Sapphire Reserve 100,000 at 795 USD, Capital One Venture X and Citi Strata Elite 75,000). One bonus funds a long-haul business one-way immediately; from spending alone at about 3,000 USD a month, the same seat takes 10 to 20 months. Only Citi reaches American AAdvantage. Amex lost Etihad in June 2026 and cut Cathay and Emirates to 5:4 in March. Transfer bonuses of 20 to 40 percent recur on Avios, Virgin Atlantic and Flying Blue. The full card tables are in Earning transferable points in your country.

Step 5: take a free status challenge if you fly at all

North America is the one region where status is free to try. American’s Instant Status Pass matches Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest and Spirit elites for four months. Delta’s 90-day challenge runs to 31 December 2026. United’s 120-day challenge runs to 21 December 2026 and grants status through January 2028. Alaska’s 90-day challenge has no end date and gives oneworld Sapphire, which is lounge access on BA, Qatar and Cathay. None of these release partner award space, but status is a scoring factor in upgrade bids and the first sort key for operational upgrades; see Status: the cheap routes in, and what it actually buys you.

Step 6: book speculatively, then improve

This is where North Americans have an advantage nobody else has. American cancels awards free and holds seats online for up to 24 hours. United cancels free (125 USD if you no-show). Alaska redeposits free apart from the 20 USD partner fee. Book the first acceptable seat in one of those three, set alerts, and trade up when a nonstop or a better cabin appears. The ranking and the rules are in Holds, cancellations and booking speculatively.

The two things that changed in 2026

United moved Polaris saver space into a members-only bucket in December 2025; Aeroplan and LifeMiles see almost none of it. Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian stopped releasing First Class and saver business to partners on 1 June 2026. If you have been planning around “Lufthansa First for 87,000 LifeMiles two weeks out”, that plan is gone unless the block is lifted.

A worked example: New York to Europe, one-way, spring

DataThis chapter's worked example, October 2026 prices

As ofOct 8, 2026

  • Cash benchmark: one-way business in the 1,200 to 2,000 USD range that is common in 2026; say 1,500 USD for the math.
  • Scan: Iberia shows two off-peak business seats JFK to Madrid at 40,500 Avios plus 127 USD. Transfer from Amex, Chase, Capital One or Bilt is 1:1 and instant.
  • Value: (1,500 − 127) ÷ 40,500 = 3.4 cents per point. Comfortably “excellent” by the scale in How to compare any two options.
  • If you have no points, the Buy-points evaluator will show Avios bought in a Finnair or Qatar sale at about 1.4 to 1.5 cents: roughly 600 USD of points plus 127 USD, under half the cash fare.
  • Protect: Iberia cancels for 0 to 25 EUR. Book, then keep a T-14 alert for a nonstop to your actual destination.

What to do if it fails

  1. Nothing in Iberia, Aeroplan or Flying Blue: swap alliance order (Star, then oneworld, then SkyTeam, then Virgin and Starlux) and widen dates three days each side.
  2. Still nothing: check American’s own metal, which releases “reasonably priced” transatlantic business, often 60,000 to 70,000, in the weeks before departure. Hold it free and keep searching.
  3. Fixed dates in peak season: price the mixed-cabin round trip from Mixed cabins: pay for lie-flat only where you sleep, and run the Points vs cash tool on the overnight leg only.
  4. Last three weeks: skip awards and read the last-minute section of Playbook by trip type.

Run the Plan my trip tool before every trip; this chapter is the North American answer key to it.
