Most award bookings return one to two cents a point, roughly what the points cost to earn. A few dozen return five to nineteen cents, and the entire case for points rests on those. This chapter is the short list for 2026, the year in which more charts changed than in any since 2019, plus the rules that stretch a single award into two cities and the list of what to avoid.
What makes a sweet spot
Three tests, in order.
Value per point. Cash fare minus taxes, divided by points. Above about 5 cents is excellent for business; first routinely clears 10. A 50,000-point award that saves you 1,000 EUR against a sale fare is 2 cents and barely worth the hassle. The same 50,000 against a 4,000 EUR one-way is 8 cents.
No carrier surcharges. Taxes of USD 50 to 150 are fine. Surcharges of USD 400 to 900 (BA, Lufthansa via Miles & More, AF/KLM, Virgin metal, Emirates via Dubai) turn a good award into a mediocre one, and they rose again in 2026.
Availability you can actually book. A chart price is a promise, not a seat. Qatar, JAL and Cathay release 330 to 361 days out and again inside two weeks; Lufthansa First is Miles & More only since June 2026; ANA First reaches partners in ones and twos. Every row below says where and when to look.

Five of the ten are first class, and that is not an accident. First class cash fares run USD 9,000 to 14,000 one-way while award prices are only 1.3 to 1.6 times the business price, so the value per point lands at 10 to 19 cents. The catch is seats: one or two per flight, released late, gone in hours. If you can be flexible by a week and book within fourteen days of departure, first class is where points do their best work.
Every award in the top ten clears 5 cents a point, and first class goes as high as 19
Value per point: one-way cash fare minus taxes, divided by points, from the top ten table. About 5 cents is excellent for business

DataTop ten table in this chapter
As ofOct 8, 2026
For business class, the three most repeatable awards are rows 4, 5 and 9: Qsuite at 70,000 because Qatar releases space generously and three programs can book it; Iberia at 40,500 because the off-peak calendar covers about eight months and Iberia releases two or more seats a year out; and Aeroplan’s 60,000 band because it survived the June 2026 repricing untouched and comes with no surcharges and a 5,000-point stopover.
Three cautions. Row 3 is marked unverified in the database because many 2026 pages still quote the pre-2024 price of 70,000; the distance chart Alaska has used since March 2024 says 130,000 for LAX to Hong Kong, so plan on that. Row 7 is the same Delta seat that Delta’s own program prices at 115,000 to 300,000, and saver space thins out from late June to August and over Christmas. Row 10 comes with “Light” conditions since 8 September 2026: no changes, no refunds, no seat selection.
Readers outside North America have their own short lists. From Europe: Qatar Qsuite to Doha 42,500, Finnair to Tokyo, Bangkok or Singapore 62,500, Air Europa Madrid to South America 43,000 via Flying Blue, Qatar First Doha to London 62,000. From Asia: Qatar to Europe 75,000 on Avios, Cathay Hong Kong to Sydney 60,000, KrisFlyer Singapore to Tokyo at 61,000 Saver. From Australia: Qatar Europe via Doha at 90,000 on Avios, JAL to Tokyo at 82,100 Qantas Points, and Alaska or AA for Qantas’s own seats to the US. The full database of 88 redemptions, filterable by region, cabin and program, lives in the Sweet spot finder.
Rules that add value
The cheap award is often not the cheapest trip. These rules add a second city, average two cabins or price a long connection as one.
| Program | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Aeroplan | One stopover on a one-way partner award for 5,000 points, up to 45 days | JFK to Frankfurt (stop) to Athens, 65,000 business |
| Alaska Atmos | Free stopover on one-way partner awards, up to 14 days, in the partner’s hub | JFK to Doha (stop) to Malé on Qatar, 70,000; Dallas to Helsinki (stop) to Rome on Finnair, 45,000 to 55,000 |
| ANA Mileage Club | Round trips only, but with a free stopover and open jaw; mixed-cabin round trips average the two cabins | US to London (stop) to Istanbul and home, 100,000 round trip on United or Turkish |
| Qatar Privilege Club | No stopover product, but multi-segment awards price by origin and destination | US to Malé as one award 85,000 off-peak, versus 105,000 as two segments |
| Turkish Miles&Smiles | Free Istanbul stopover on round trips (phone); US to Istanbul and US to Istanbul to Europe both 65,000 | Fly to Istanbul, stay, continue to Europe at no extra miles |
| JAL Mileage Bank | Up to 3 stopovers on partner awards, 7 on oneworld multi-carrier; round trips priced on total distance | Emirates JFK to Milan 85,000 round trip; oneworld multi-stop 120,000 |
| Flying Blue | Free stopover on one-way awards including partners (reported September 2026) | US to Amsterdam (stop) to Madrid |
| Singapore KrisFlyer | One free stopover on Saver round trips; Saver and Advantage can be waitlisted | US to Singapore (stop) to Bangkok |
Redemptions to avoid
| Routing | Why it is bad | Instead |
|---|---|---|
| British Airways metal via Avios | London to JFK Club World 88,000 off-peak plus GBP 199.50; about USD 508 surcharge from the US side | Avios on Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar or Finnair; or BA via JAL Mileage Bank at 42,000 plus about USD 210 |
| Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian business via Miles & More | 48,000 to 60,000 miles plus EUR 750 to 925 one-way surcharges (FRA to JFK round trip EUR 1,495 since 5 Oct 2026) | The same points on TAP, LOT or Turkish via Aeroplan or LifeMiles, no surcharges. Lufthansa Group saver business has been closed to partners since June 2026, so treat Lufthansa and Swiss seats there as a rare find. Keep Miles & More for Allegris First |
| Lufthansa group via ANA, Turkish, Thai or KrisFlyer | These programs pass the surcharges through, USD 1,000 to 2,300 round trip | Aeroplan, LifeMiles or United when partner space appears (rare since June 2026), otherwise TAP, LOT or Turkish |
| Emirates via Skywards, US to Dubai | Surcharges to about USD 1,700 round trip; business Saver 109,000 LAX to Dubai; First elite-only | JFK to Milan or Newark to Athens at 59,000; JAL Mileage Bank 85,000 round trip; Qatar for Gulf routings |
| Virgin Atlantic Upper Class at peak | USD 300 to 400 surcharges one-way; semi-dynamic points to 50,000 or more | Delta One via Virgin, or Aer Lingus via Avios |
| Delta SkyMiles at standard pricing | Delta One routinely 300,000 one-way to Europe | Virgin at 50,000; or a flash sale at 85,000 to 115,000 |
| United partner First | Lufthansa 154,000, ANA 242,000 one-way; partner business 88,000 for non-Premier members | Miles & More for Lufthansa First (about 91,000 plus surcharges, the only route since June 2026); Virgin for ANA First |
| Qantas points for Qantas international | Sydney to LAX 130,100 plus carrier charges; Sydney to London 166,300 | Alaska 85,000 or AA 80,000 for the same seat; Qatar Avios 90,000 Europe to Australia |
| Etihad Guest’s own program | Dynamic and unpublished; US to Abu Dhabi business often 120,000 or more | AAdvantage fixed chart: Etihad business 70,000, Apartment 115,000, by phone |
| Aeroplan Europe to Asia and long transpacific | Since 1 June 2026: Europe to Asia business 100,000 to 130,000; US to Southeast Asia 102,500 | Qatar Avios 75,000 Asia to Europe; Virgin for ANA plus an Aeroplan intra-Asia add-on |
| Cathay Asia Miles from the US | Business 91,000 to 119,000, First 125,000 to 160,000; Amex now 5:4 | Alaska 75,000 to 85,000 business or 130,000 First with a stopover; AA 70,000 or 110,000 |
Through the wrong program, the same seat can cost up to six times the points
Points one-way, from the table above: the route to avoid, then the same seat booked the better way. Ranges are drawn at their lower end

Where it breaks: this list is already stale somewhere. LifeMiles, Turkish and Virgin all repriced partner awards mid-year with no notice, and aggregator pages lag by one to two years (Alaska’s Cathay and Qantas prices are the worst examples). Trust the program’s own search over any blog table, including the ones above, and check the verified date and confidence flag on each row of the finder.
Transfers are irreversible and charts change without notice. Never transfer or buy into a program on the strength of a sweet spot alone. Search the seat on the program’s own site or seats.aero, confirm the price at checkout, then move the points. The chapter Transfer bonuses covers the one case where timing a transfer pays.
Open the Sweet spot finder, filter by your region pair and cabin, and read the notes column on each row; then move on to Earning transferable points in your country to see which of these you can actually reach from where you live.
