Part 2Cash fares

Cash fare sales and when they happen

The two global sale seasons, each airline's pattern, the price targets that mean 'book now', and how to track a fare without watching it all day.

10 min readSources at the end

Most people who fly business class for 40 to 55 percent less than their colleagues did nothing cleverer than buy in a sale. Business fares swing more than economy fares, airlines run premium sales on a fairly predictable calendar, and the cheapest competitors on any route are easy to name. This chapter gives you the calendar, the targets and the routine.

The two sale seasons

Premium cabin sales cluster in two windows:

  • Early to mid January. Post-holiday demand slump. British Airways’ largest sale opens around 6 January and runs about three weeks. Virgin Atlantic’s Boxing Day sale runs into late January. Finnair, Qatar and Emirates all discount. Travel windows usually cover February to June and sometimes the following autumn.
  • Late August to September. Post-summer. Air France’s “Rendez-Vous” (10 to 23 September in 2026), BA again (27 August to 29 September in 2026), Virgin (27 August to 30 September in 2026), TAP’s short flashes (14 to 17 September in 2026), Qatar’s autumn sale (1 to 4 October in 2026). Travel windows run through the following spring and summer.

Secondary windows: Black Friday week in late November (BA, Virgin, Cathay, Emirates, Qatar), and a spring “travel festival” period from March to May (Qatar, Etihad, Turkish).

Two seasons carry most business class sales: January, and late August to September

Sale fares land at odd hours. An alert means you do not have to be awake for them.

Airline by airline

AirlinePattern seen in 2025 to 2026What a good fare looks like

First week of January and last week of August. Open Google Flights for your two or three most likely trips, look at the next six months, and compare against the targets below. Most of your annual savings will come from these two weeks.

The tracking routine

  1. Google Flights, round trip, Business cabin, your origin plus two nearby airports, your destination plus the nearby cities you would accept. Open the date grid and price graph. Switch on Track prices for the specific dates and for “any dates”.
  2. Skyscanner once, on exact dates, to catch OTA fares Google misses. Only book an OTA fare if the saving is over about 150 to 200 EUR per ticket and the plan is fixed (see Booking channels: direct, OTA, consolidator, and the grey zone).
  3. Two deal feeds. travel-dealz.com and premium-flights.com for ex-Europe; Going Elite or Thrifty Traveler Premium for ex-US; Turning Left For Less for the UK. All post sale fares with the fare rules.
  4. Check midweek. Cash business fares peak Tuesday to Thursday mornings on corporate routes, and are cheapest for Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday leisure departures. Shift by a day when you can.
  5. Book when the target is hit. Not when you think it might drop further. Fares under the target are sale fares; they do not get cheaper, they sell out.

What a sale fare usually includes, and doesn’t

  • Fare class: sale fares book into deep business buckets (I, P, Z, R). They earn fewer miles (often 100 to 125 percent instead of 150 to 200) and may not be upgradeable to First.
  • Changes: typically 150 to 300 EUR change fee plus fare difference. Cancellation often not allowed, or refundable only to a voucher.
  • “Light” fares (Lufthansa Group, Etihad, Air France/KLM since September 2026): no seat selection, reduced baggage, sometimes no lounge. Still a lie-flat seat. Worth it for most leisure trips.
  • Aircraft: the sale is on the route, not the plane. Qatar’s older 777s have 2-2-2 seats, not Qsuite; Turkish’s 777s are 2-3-2. Check the seat map before paying if the seat matters more than the price.

Earn miles on every cash ticket

A business fare earns real miles: 100 to 200 percent of flown distance on most carriers. A Europe to Asia round trip earns 10,000 to 25,000 miles plus status credit. Decide which program gets them before you book, and keep everything in one or two programs so they add up to an award. The Earning transferable points in your country chapter has the partner map.

Next: starting your trip somewhere else entirely, which is often cheaper than any sale.
