Most of what you have read or watched about business class with points was true when it was made. The problem is that 2026 was the worst year for loyalty programs in a long time: Aeroplan, Flying Blue and LifeMiles all repriced, Lufthansa locked partners out, and banks cut transfer ratios. Advice that was correct in 2024 now costs real money, and nothing on the page tells you it has expired.

The seven below cost the most.

Aeroplan’s “160,000 for two”
One 797 EUR course still quotes a client who paid 2,350 USD for 160,000 Aeroplan points and booked two business seats. The course does not name the route, but 80,000 per seat matches the old price for a 5,001 to 7,000 mile Europe to Asia trip such as London to Tokyo. Since 1 June 2026 that band is 92,500, so the same two seats need 185,000 points.
At that course’s own price (about 1.47 US cents a point), the missing 25,000 points cost about 365 USD. Bought today, when Aeroplan’s offer is only about 30 percent off (about 1.85 cents), they cost about 460 USD. Australia to Europe is worse: it went from 60,000 to 100,000 to 130,000 per seat, so a couple needs 80,000 to 140,000 more points than the old advice said.
The 60,000 band for North America to Europe under 4,000 miles did not change. Aeroplan is still the most useful currency to buy; just check the band.
Flying Blue’s 60,000 is a different product now
Since 8 September 2026, Air France and KLM awards come in three versions. Business Light keeps the 60,000 price but drops changes, refunds and, for members without status, lounge access. Standard, which matches what 60,000 used to buy, is 75,000. Flex is 110,000.
One 2026 analysis found 60,000 Light space “dead for most people” with 75,000 the going rate. At the best 2026 purchase price for Flying Blue (about 1.69 cents), 15,000 extra miles is about 255 USD per person each way, about 1,015 USD for a couple’s round trip. Surcharges from Paris run up to about 609 USD on top.
Instead: Promo Rewards, published on the 1st of each month at 25 percent off (45,000 when your city is listed), or Virgin Atlantic points for the same Air France and KLM seats from about 53,000.
LifeMiles: cheap miles, moving prices
LifeMiles is still the cheapest program to buy (about 1.27 to 1.35 cents in 2026 sales), but on 28 April 2026 it raised prices without notice for the third time in about 13 months. United business to Europe went from 80,000 to 92,400; Swiss, Austrian and TAP business now prices from 63,530 to 81,290 depending on route and date. Someone who bought 80,000 miles for a United seat in March was about 12,400 short in May, roughly 170 USD at sale prices, and bought points cannot be refunded.
Instead: find the seat, see the price on lifemiles.com, then buy exactly that many.
Lufthansa First with partner miles
For years the classic move was Lufthansa First booked with LifeMiles, Aeroplan or United, usually about 14 days out, with no fuel surcharges. Since 1 June 2026 Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian release no First and no saver business to partner programs. Lufthansa First seats you see on partner sites are phantom space.
Lufthansa First is now bookable only with Miles & More, at about 91,000 miles plus about 800 USD one-way from the US. Surcharges rose again on 5 October 2026. The seat is still worth it to many people, but it costs about 800 USD more per person each way than the surcharge-free partner route the old advice describes.
Qsuites for friends and family
“Buy Avios on sale, move them to Qatar, book Qsuites for the family” was the classic 2025 play. Since 16 June 2026, Burgundy and Silver Privilege Club members can book awards only for four named people, and the list is locked for six months.
Instead: book anyone outside your list through British Airways Club with the same Avios (they move 1:1 between programs). Expect higher surcharges there, about 235 USD each way on US to Doha, and check the space on qatarairways.com first, because the BA site shows Qatar seats that do not exist.
Any points price without a date is a guess. Before you buy or transfer, look up the price on the program’s own site for your exact flight. If a guide, video or course shows a price from before June 2026 for Aeroplan, Flying Blue, LifeMiles or Lufthansa, assume it is wrong.
Transfer ratios that changed
Bank points are only as good as the ratio. Amex US cut Emirates to 5:4 (September 2025) and Cathay to 5:4 (1 March 2026), so 100,000 Asia Miles now takes 125,000 points, and dropped Etihad entirely (30 June). Amex Singapore Platinum Charge went from 400:250 to 600:250 for KrisFlyer and most airlines (23 February), so a 100,000-mile award now needs 240,000 points instead of 160,000. Amex Germany dropped Etihad on 15 June, and Amex Netherlands cut Flying Blue from 5:4 to 2:1 on 1 July.

Instead: check the current ratio in your country before you plan around a card. Earning transferable points in your country has the 2026 tables.
“Buy in every sale” and the 80 percent headline
Both claims compare points with the wrong cash price. Promotional pages show savings of 80 percent or more against walk-up fares of 6,300 to 7,000 USD, which almost nobody pays. Sale round trips in business from Western Europe to East Asia run 1,500 to 2,100 EUR.
Now do it with points. London to Tokyo on Aeroplan bought at the best 2026 bonus (about 1.30 cents) costs about 1,290 USD each way, about 2,580 USD round trip. The sale fare is cheaper, often by several hundred euros, earns miles, and carries no availability risk. Bought points win on one-ways, peak dates and premium carriers that rarely discount, not on a standard round trip.
Instead: price the cash fare first, every time, and run the Points vs cash tool with the fare you could actually buy. Cash fare sales and when they happen is the next place to start.
