Air Canada Aeroplan
The most useful Star Alliance program for most travelers: a fixed partner chart, no fuel surcharges, a CAD 39 partner fee and a 5,000-point stopover. After the 1 June 2026 repricing it is still strong across the Atlantic and from the Pacific Northwest to North Asia, and weak for Europe to Asia or Australia.

Use it for
- Boston, Newark, New York or Washington to Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich or Brussels (under 4,000 miles) on Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels, Austrian, TAP or LOT: 60,000 points plus about USD 57 in taxes outbound (about CAD 117 to 304 on the way back) and CAD 39
- The same transatlantic award with a stopover in one European city and a flight on to a second: 65,000 points (the stopover adds 5,000)
- Vancouver or Seattle to Tokyo or Seoul (under 5,000 miles) on ANA, EVA, Asiana or Air Canada: 55,000 points plus about USD 60 and CAD 39
- Europe to the Middle East or North Africa within 2,001 to 4,000 miles, for example London to Cairo or to Dubai via Istanbul: 40,000 points plus taxes and CAD 39
- Short business flights within Europe under 1,000 miles: 12,500 points plus taxes and CAD 39, useful for positioning to a cheaper transatlantic gateway
Do not use it for
- Europe to Asia or Australia to Europe on partners: the 7,001-plus mile band rose to 130,000 points on 1 June 2026
- United, Etihad and Emirates flights: Aeroplan prices these 'select partners' dynamically, outside the fixed chart, and United Polaris saver space has been near zero for partners since December 2025
- Lufthansa First and close-in Lufthansa Group saver business: not released to partner programs since 1 June 2026
Where to search
Search aircanada.com logged in with 'Book with points' ticked; partner flights show as 'Operated by' the partner. Results flagged 'Mixed cabin' must be checked segment by segment, because Aeroplan charges the highest cabin's price per direction. seats.aero covers Aeroplan (AwardFares has not since March 2025). Lufthansa Group space still shows, but phantom space is common after the June 2026 partner cut, so take every itinerary to the payment page before transferring.
How to book, step by step
- Create an Aeroplan account in your passport name, add a phone number and two-factor login, and complete identity verification (photo ID plus a selfie) if you plan to use Family Sharing.
- Search aircanada.com with 'Book with points' ticked, one-way, business. For a stopover, choose 'Multi-city/Stopover': one stopover per direction, 24 hours to 45 days, 5,000 points.
- Open any result marked 'Mixed cabin' and check which segments are economy; you pay the business price either way.
- Choose the fare option: Standard is cheapest but costs CAD 75 to change and CAD 150 to cancel online; Latitude costs more points and changes free.
- Go to the payment page and check the taxes plus the CAD 39 partner fee. There are no holds, so do this before you transfer.
- Transfer Amex, Chase, Capital One or Bilt points (1:1, instant), refresh, and confirm the seat is still there.
- Pay the taxes, which are charged in CAD (for some international departures, in the departure airport's currency). The award is ticketed immediately; check for the ticket number.
- Changes and cancellations must be made at least 2 hours before departure.
When you need to phone
Needed for complex itineraries and when the site fails: 1-800-361-5373 (Canada and US), 7 a.m. to midnight Eastern. Phone bookings cost an extra CAD 30.
Fees
Partner booking fee CAD 39 per ticket (once per round trip). Phone booking CAD 30. Standard option: change CAD 75 online or CAD 100 by phone per direction, cancel CAD 150 online or CAD 175 by phone. Economy Flex: free changes, cancel CAD 75 online or CAD 125 by phone. Latitude: free. Fees waived for Super Elite.
Surcharges
No carrier surcharges on Air Canada or Star Alliance partner awards, including Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian; you pay taxes and airport fees only. Departures from the UK still carry high air passenger duty.
Getting points in
US: Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One, Bilt and Rove, all 1:1 and instant. Canada: Amex Membership Rewards 1:1, instant. Marriott Bonvoy 3:1 with 5,000 bonus per 60,000, 1 to 8 days. Singapore: HSBC 35,000 to 10,000. India: Axis EDGE Miles 1:2 and HDFC 2:1.
Booking for other people
You can book for anyone using the traveler's full legal name; there is no beneficiary list. Family Sharing pools points for up to 8 verified members (each a member for at least 6 months and not in another pool in the past 6 months); the Family Lead (18 or over) decides who can redeem, and pool points can book for anyone.
Strengths and traps
- No fuel surcharges on partner awards; United, Etihad, Emirates and flydubai are priced dynamically outside the fixed chart since 2026
- Stopover on a one-way partner award for 5,000 points
- Best free Star Alliance search engine
- NA to Europe under 4,000 miles still 60,000 business after the June 2026 repricing
- Trap: Partner chart repriced 1 June 2026: Europe to Asia business 100,000 to 130,000, LAX or NYC to Tokyo 85,000
- Trap: Offers are targeted; the 30 percent discount tier (1.85 to 1.92 cents) is not worth buying
- Trap: CAD 39 partner booking fee; Canadian addresses pay sales tax
