Use it for

• US or Canada to Japan in ANA business: 50,000 miles one-way in low season, 52,500 regular, 82,500 high (100,000, 105,000 and 165,000 round trip), plus fuel surcharges reported at about USD 200 to 400 per round trip
• ANA First US to Japan: 75,000 miles one-way in low season, 85,000 regular (150,000 and 170,000 round trip), plus surcharges
• North America to Europe on surcharge-free partners such as United or Air Canada: 50,000 miles one-way in business, or 100,000 round trip with one stopover, plus about USD 150 in taxes per round trip (one observation)
• Japan to Europe in ANA business: 55,000 miles one-way in low season, 57,500 regular (110,000 and 115,000 round trip), plus surcharges

Do not use it for

• Lufthansa and Swiss partner awards: ANA passes on their surcharges, reported at USD 2,000 or more per round trip
• ANA high season (Golden Week, mid-July to late August, late December): business rises to 82,500 one-way and First to 150,000
• Booking for friends: awards are only for registered award users, and ANA may ask for proof of the relationship

Where to search

ana.co.jp has two separate tools: International Awards for ANA flights, with an availability calendar, and Partner Airline Awards, with no calendar and frequent 'no results' on complex itineraries. ANA space opens at 09:00 Japan time 355 days out, and united.com and aeroplan.com see the same ANA business space, so use them (or seats.aero) to find dates, then search the exact flights on ana.co.jp. For partner awards, find each segment on united.com or aeroplan.com first and rebuild the trip in ANA's partner tool.

How to book, step by step

1. Join ANA Mileage Club and register everyone else who will fly as an award user (up to 10, family only) before you book.
2. For ANA flights, open International Awards, check the season calendar (2026 low season was 6 January to 28 February and 1 to 28 April) and search one-way or round trip; one-way awards are allowed since 24 June 2025.
3. Remember that a round trip's 355-day window is counted from the return date, so book one-ways if your outbound date opens first.
4. For partner flights, confirm each segment on united.com or aeroplan.com, then enter the same flights in Partner Airline Awards; partner awards cannot be waitlisted, and Virgin Atlantic, Air Macau, Eurowings and Philippine Airlines are phone-only.
5. If ANA business is full, waitlist one ANA flight per one-way sector; waitlists run until 14 days before departure.
6. Price the itinerary to the payment page to see surcharges, then transfer: Amex MR US 1:1 takes about 2 days and Marriott 4 to 7 days, and there is no free hold while you wait.
7. Book online (phone ticketing costs USD 25 in the US) and pay surcharges by card; miles are deducted at booking.
8. On partner awards you can change date and flight up to 96 hours before departure; to cancel, refund before the first flight for 3,000 miles or JPY 3,000 by card online.

When you need to phone

Not needed for most bookings. Required for partner awards on Virgin Atlantic, Air Macau, Eurowings and Philippine Airlines, and for bookings with lap infants or unaccompanied children; phone ticketing costs USD 25 in the US. ANA's US number is 1-800-235-9262, 24 hours, per ana.co.jp.

Fees

No fee online; phone ticketing USD 25 in the US. Refund 3,000 miles, or JPY 3,000 (local equivalent) by card on the website, for awards issued from 24 June 2025; the card option is not offered for awards issued in most of Europe, India or Mexico. Partner awards: date and flight changes up to 96 hours before departure; airline, routing, class and passenger cannot be changed.

Surcharges

ANA adds fuel surcharges on its own flights, reported at about USD 200 to 400 per round trip between North America and Japan. Most partners' surcharges are passed on, heavy on Lufthansa and Swiss (USD 2,000 or more per round trip reported); Air Canada, Air New Zealand and United are the main exceptions, though United's can appear on US to Asia routes.

Getting points in

US: Amex Membership Rewards 1:1 (about 2 days). Marriott 3:1 plus 5,000 bonus per 60,000 points (about 4 to 7 days). Japan: Amex Membership Rewards via the Membership Rewards Plus option, ANA co-brand cards and Marriott Bonvoy Amex. Amex Canada does not transfer to ANA; other Amex markets were not confirmed for 2026. IHG (5:1) and Hyatt (5:2) also transfer at poor rates.

Booking for other people

No pooling. Up to 10 registered award users, limited to family (reported as spouse and relatives within the second degree), and ANA may request documents. Miles expire 36 months after earning (third-party source).
