Emirates Skywards

Mainly useful for the one-way Business Saver on Emirates' fifth-freedom flights (New York to Milan or Athens) and for UAE residents who earn Skywards miles directly. Flights through Dubai carry heavy carrier charges, transfer ratios from US banks have worsened, and First is closed to Blue members.

Use it for

  • New York JFK to Milan or Newark to Athens in Emirates business, no Dubai stop: 59,000 miles one-way as a Business Saver since 20 May 2026, plus about USD 300 in taxes and charges (one observation)
  • Dubai to Tokyo in Emirates business Saver: 83,000 miles one-way, plus about USD 150 in taxes and charges (one observation)
  • Upgrading a paid Economy Flex Plus ticket on New York to Europe flights to business: 45,000 miles plus the cash fare already paid (since 20 May 2026)

Do not use it for

  • US to Dubai in business: JFK to Dubai Business Saver is about 96,000 one-way (one source) and Emirates' carrier charges can exceed USD 2,000 on some routes
  • First Class without Silver status: Blue members cannot book First awards, and JFK to Dubai First is 188,000 one-way
  • Transferring points into a brand-new account to book someone else: One Mile at a Time reports Emirates audits that froze accounts and canceled tickets

Where to search

Search on emirates.com logged in to Skywards and choose to pay with miles; results show Saver and Flex Plus prices, and one-way Saver in business has existed since 20 May 2026. Emirates releases little business space to partner programs, so Skywards is the main way in; seats.aero indexes Skywards (cached, recheck live). Saver space on the fifth-freedom routes is tight: check when the schedule opens about 11 months out and again inside two weeks of departure.

How to book, step by step

  1. Open a Skywards account well before you transfer points, and book for yourself where you can; accounts that receive transfers and book third parties are the ones reported audited.
  2. Search one-way on emirates.com with miles, Business, and compare the Saver and Flex Plus columns.
  3. Click through to the payment page and note the carrier charges and taxes before moving any points.
  4. If you need time for a transfer, call Skywards for a hold; up to 24 hours free is reported by point.me (US number 1-800-777-3999), not confirmed for 2026.
  5. Transfer points: Bilt 1:1 is the best US route and posts instantly; Capital One 4:3, Amex and Citi 5:4; Marriott 3:1 plus bonus takes about 3 days.
  6. Book online and pay the charges by card; Saver includes one free date change.
  7. If plans change, Saver refunds cost USD 75 and further changes USD 25; Flex Plus changes and refunds are free before travel.

When you need to phone

Not needed for most bookings. Call for holds and itineraries the site will not price; Emirates' US reservations number 1-800-777-3999 is listed by point.me for award holds.

Fees

Saver: one free date change, then USD 25 per change; refund USD 75. Flex Plus: free changes and refunds before travel, fare difference payable. Miles can be extended for about USD 20 per 1,000 miles for 12 months (Upgraded Points).

Surcharges

Emirates passes its own carrier charges onto awards; Upgraded Points says they can exceed USD 2,000 on some routes, and earlier research put Dubai routings at USD 700 to 1,700 per round trip (reported, not confirmed for 2026). Fifth-freedom New York to Milan or Athens ran about USD 300 one-way (one observation). Awards on partner airlines carry much lower charges.

Getting points in

US: Bilt 1:1 (instant), Capital One 4:3 (since 13 January 2026), Amex MR 5:4 (since 16 September 2025), Citi ThankYou 5:4 (since 27 July 2025); Chase ended on 16 October 2025. Marriott 3:1 plus 5,000 bonus per 60,000 points (about 3 days). UAE: Amex Platinum 3:2, Citi Miles, and Emirates NBD, HSBC and Emirates Islamic co-brand cards that earn Skywards directly. Germany: Amex 2:1. India: Amex 2:1. UK, Singapore and other markets: Amex and HSBC list Skywards, ratios not rechecked for 2026.

Booking for other people

Skywards My Family lets up to 8 members aged 2 and over pool a share of their earnings into one account (from 2026 research, not rechecked). You can book awards for other people, but One Mile at a Time reports fraud audits on accounts that book third parties after receiving transfers. Miles expire after about 3 years.

Strengths and traps

  • New one-way Business Saver since 20 May 2026 at half the round-trip price; JFK to Milan or Athens 59,000 without the Dubai surcharges
  • Family pooling (My Family) up to 8 members
  • Trap: Does not sell miles; Marriott 3:1 is the only outright route
  • Trap: Dubai routings carry USD 700 to 1,700 in surcharges per round trip; First awards restricted to Silver and above since May 2025; premium awards up about 15 percent on 20 May 2026

Transfers in from: Amex MR US (5:4), Citi ThankYou (5:4 since July 2025), Capital One Miles (1:0.75), Bilt, Amex MR UK, Amex MR DE (2:1), Amex MR UAE (3:2), Emirates NBD and HSBC co-brands (UAE), Marriott Bonvoy.
